Spotlight Series Q&A for Entrepreneurs

Micah Jackson’s business, Esqapes, is truly a one of a kind experience. This unique business model combines up and coming technology with something we could all use a little more of, relaxation!

1. Tell us a little bit about your business and what you do.

Esqapes is a first-of-its-kind, VR augmented massage experience. We combine traditional wellness practices with automation and technology to create an immersive experience that re-imagines how people relax. We utilize premium massage chairs, VR headsets, wind, heat therapy and aromatherapy to transport our guests to a relaxing, exotic, virtual environment such as a tropical beach resort, or a cozy sauna in the middle of a thunderstorm.

2. What made you aspire to be an entrepreneur? 

Well, when I created the initial concept for Esqapes, I was working on a totally un-related VR project. What I found was that spending time in this generated virtual world, really helped me to relax and I wondered if this could help others do the same. Also, I was really passionate about pursuing a career in VR, but there were very few opportunities available to me. So, I figured why not try to start my own VR business.

3. What is the one thing you wish you had known before starting your own business?

Hmm. I wish I had a better understanding about targeted marketing and how important a sustainable marketing plan is to driving customers through the door.

4. What has been the most successful avenue for building and growing your brand/business (social media, ads, word of mouth, referrals, etc.)?

Initially it was our PR rollout, which generated a lot of interest. However, the most sustainable channels have been online ads and word of mouth. Of these, the word of mouth referral is the most valuable.

5. What are the aspects of your business that you enjoy the most?

I love the moment right after our guests have finished their Esqape session and I ask how it was. My favorite reactions are, “That was incredible!” or “OMG, that was so relaxing.” We’ve had three separate 50^th birthday celebrations, which really warmed my heart. I’ve been surprised by the wide variety of guests that have come out to escape.

6. What do you love doing in your free time to refuel and have fun?

Believe it or not, I love creating VR worlds in my free time. This is why I started the business. It’s sort of like having a super power! I love creating a beautiful world in a computer and having the ability to go inside it. I hope I can keep doing this and sharing these worlds with others!
